ECOLOGIST I POSITION
Two
Ecologist I Positions Opening April of 2008
BACKGROUND:
The Adopt-A-Stream Foundation is a private non-profit
corporation. Our mission is to teach people how to
become stewards of their watersheds. That mission
is carried out by: producing environmental education
materials, conducting Streamkeeper Academy classes and
providing local communities stream and wetland
restoration technical assistance.
Now,
we are in the process of developing the NW Stream Center
and environmental learning facility with stream and
wetland ecology & fish and wildlife habitat
restoration as its central themes.
We
are seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent
natural resource knowledge and skills to join our small
professional staff in April 2008. The selected candidate
will work in the field with our fish &
wildlife team of ecologist and technicians, and in the
Northwest Stream Center with staff and adjunct professors
who conduct Streamkeeper Academy classes.
You
can expect occasional evening and weekend work activities
and that you will spend approximately 50% of your time
working in salmon stream environments. You can also
expect that excellent job performance will lead to
promotion opportunities (Ecologist II) level. The
following provides more details about this 40-hour/week
position that has a flexible work schedule option of
every other Friday off.
SALARY:
$26 - $31K DOQ. Benefits equal to 12% of salary for
Health/Retirement provided upon successful completion of
a probation period of up to six months
DUTIES
/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Public Relations: Door to door contact
with private landowners to request permission to conduct
survey work or to construct stream/wetland restoration
projects. Recruit and coordinate volunteers to assist
with restoration projects
2. Construction Labor: Work with a team of ecologist and
technicians constructing fish and wildlife habitat
restoration projects, e.g., culvert removal/replacement
and bridge construction, installation of large woody
debris, and stream bank/wetland vegetation restoration
and invasive plant removal.
3. Natural Resource Inventory: Conduct salmon habitat and
non-point pollution surveys, enter field information into
a computer database, and assist data analysis.
4. Environmental Education: Assist staff with promoting
and conducting Streamkeeper Academy classes at the
Adopt-A-Stream Foundations NW Stream Center.
5. Complete other duties as assigned.
SKILLS
/ KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
1. Must have excellent written and verbal communication
skills.
2. Must have the natural resource knowledge and physical
ability to conduct and biological surveys and habitat
restoration work in rough terrain in all weather
conditions.
3. Must be physically fit and able to lift up to 40
pounds.
4. Basic computer skills such as word processing,
database, and spreadsheet skills required. Skill in both
PC and Apple computer systems preferred.
5. Must have the ability to learn and become proficient
in the use of GIS software (Arc View) and computer aided
drafting systems.
6. Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
and manage time efficiently are essential.
7. Thorough knowledge of stream and wetland ecology, and
salmonids and their habitat is required. Must have
excellent written and verbal communication skills and the
ability to communicate with small audiences. Teaching
experience preferred.
MINIMUM
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
BS natural resources or related field and one year of
experience related to the duties and responsibilities
outlined in the job description above. Must have
experience using a variety of hand tools typically used
in stream restoration work.
